Out in the World: Education programme
Across the generations, Irish LGBTQ+ people have emigrated and found opportunities to live and love abroad. EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, in partnership with the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs, are proud to play a role in illuminating this hidden history of Irish emigration through the ‘Out in the World’ exhibition.
In conjunction with the exhibition, we are running a special education program that includes virtual workshops, a resource pack, curator’s talk and teacher training sessions.
Using the six key themes of the exhibition – exclusion, community, love, defiance, solidarity and return – the program’s activities gives students the opportunity to delve into the lives of the featured characters and get a better understanding of and empathy with diversity in our society.

‘Out in the World’ Workshop
This workshop provides a platform for students to explore key human rights issues through the six themes of the Out in the World exhibition (exclusion, community, love, defiance, solidarity and return). Students will take part in practical exercises to put them ‘in the shoes’ of characters from EPIC and the Out in the World Exhibition, building upon their empathy, problem solving, teamwork, community, and social and world citizen skills.
Suitable for Secondary students and above
‘You and the World’ Art Workshop
In this kinaesthetic learning workshop, students will explore what it might mean to be part of a minority community through practical art activities. Exploring intangible issues regularly encountered by minority communities, such as self-expression, censorship, identity, representation, communication and exclusion, by the end of the workshop they will come away with an array of artwork that they can use to showcase a mini-exhibition of what it means to be ‘you in the world’.

‘Out in the World’ Lesson Plan Resource Pack
This lesson plan provides schools with an introduction in how to approach and explore the teaching of human rights issues in the classroom, using the themes of the Out in the World exhibition (exclusion, community, love, defiance, solidarity and return) to do so. Combining biography, discussion questions, trivia and creative activities, plus longer form projects and a list of resources, classes will be introduced to figures from both EPIC’s permanent exhibition and the temporary exhibition. These exercises will enable students to build upon their empathy, problem solving, teamwork, community, and social and world citizen skills in the classroom. This is a free complementary pack to our ‘Out in the World’ Workshop that provides classroom activities for before and after the workshop, but it does not cover the same material.

‘Out in the World’ Teacher Training Sessions
These free sessions will cover an introduction to the Out in the World exhibition and explore how to approach the teaching of human rights and LGBTQ+ issues in the classroom, using the Out in the World Lesson Plan Resource Pack as a teaching tool. Teachers will discover how to implement a range of resources such as biography, discussion questions, trivia, creative activities, plus longer form projects in their schools, and become more confident in supporting and encouraging students in their journey towards global citizenship both in the classroom and beyond.
