About The CHQ Tour

The CHQ Building, originally known as Stack A, was constructed in the early 19th century as part of the broader Custom House docks complex. This tour offers the chance to step back in time and discover the building’s original purpose as a bonded warehouse for storing valuable cargo including tobacco, tea, wine and spirits.

On the CHQ tour, you’ll also hear the fascinating story of its transformation into a grand Banqueting Hall in 1856, when thousands gathered for an enormous celebration in honour of Irish soldiers returning from the Crimean War.

Architectural Marvel

Designed by celebrated Scottish engineer and architect John Rennie, the CHQ Building is a testament to pioneering architectural innovation. On this tour, you’ll learn about Rennie’s ingenious use of cast and wrought iron, materials that were still considered experimental at the time, and how Stack A became one of Dublin’s earliest fireproof buildings.

Look up at one of the oldest iron-framed roofs in Ireland, discover the clever engineering hidden within its original pillars, and head underground to explore the 72 historic vaults that run beneath the building. Once capable of storing more than two million litres of wine and spirits, these vaults have since been carefully restored and repurposed, with many now home to EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum.

A Changing Landscape

Beyond its architectural significance, the CHQ Building has been a silent witness to the transformation of Dublin’s Docklands. Once a bustling centre for trade and commerce, the area has evolved into a modern urban district filled with offices, restaurants and cultural spaces.

The building itself has undergone an equally remarkable transformation. After falling into disuse in the 20th century, an extensive restoration project preserved as much of its original structure as possible while giving the building a new purpose. As you explore, you’ll see how historic features sit alongside contemporary additions, offering a glimpse into more than 200 years of change in the Docklands.

Please note: CHQ is currently undergoing construction as part of an exciting new project coming in 2027. As a result, visitors may experience some noise during the CHQ tour – we thank you for your cooperation and understanding at this time.
