And no, we aren’t being hyperbolic.
Here at EPIC, we tell the stories of Irish people who left the island and shaped the world. Now, that story is reaching an even wider audience, as EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum features in the internationally broadcast television series World’s Greatest! on Bloomberg Television.
Our dedicated episode, which aired on Saturday 18 and Saturday 25 July, introduces viewers around the world to EPIC’s immersive approach to history, the people behind the museum and the deeply personal stories at the heart of the Irish diaspora.
EPIC was chosen through an independent selection process for the long-running documentary series, which has spent almost 20 years profiling exceptional organisations, destinations and innovators from across the world. We’ve already won Europe’s Leading Tourist Attraction 3 years in a row, now is the time to come and find out why we’re World’s Greatest museum.
Bringing Irish Emigration to Life
Filmed on location in Dublin’s Docklands, the programme takes viewers inside our historic vaults to explore how technology and interactive storytelling can transform the way history is experienced.
Rather than viewing objects behind glass, visitors to EPIC move through 20 interactive galleries where they can listen to emigrants’ experiences, follow their journeys and discover the influence Irish people have had on music, literature, science, politics, sport, business and culture.
The episode also showcases our recently upgraded front galleries, which opened earlier this year. These new experiences bring visitors closer to the emotional reality of emigration, from the landscapes people carried in their memories in our Isle of the Senses gallery to the ships and aircraft that transported generations of Irish emigrants around the world in our Leaving the Island gallery.
Through interviews with EPIC’s team members and founder Neville Isdell, former Chairman and CEO of Coca-Cola, the programme goes behind the scenes to explore the vision that shaped the museum and the continued commitment to finding new ways to tell Ireland’s global story.
Irish Family History Centre
The programme also visits our Irish Family History Centre here at EPIC, where genealogy experts help visitors uncover their Irish ancestry, trace relatives and reconnect with places and stories that may have been lost across generations.
More than 70 million people worldwide claim Irish ancestry. For many members of this global community, a visit to Ireland is more than a holiday. It is an opportunity to understand where their family came from and understand that history which shaped who they are today. As EPIC founder Neville Isdell says: “You can leave Ireland, but Ireland never leaves you.”
Sharing Ireland’s Story With The World
EPIC’s CEO Aileesh Carew said the selection reflects the work of the entire museum team and the enduring power of Ireland’s emigration story.
“Our mission has always been to inspire audiences from around the world with a deeper understanding of Irish identity and culture through the stories of the ordinary and extraordinary emigrants whose influence can be found in every corner of the globe.
“To be selected by World’s Greatest! is a tremendous honour and a wonderful recognition of the passion, creativity and commitment of our entire team. Every day, we welcome visitors who are moved not only by Ireland’s past, but by the extraordinary impact Irish people have had on the world.”
We believe our appearance on World’s Greatest! reflects the growing global appetite for meaningful cultural experiences and the enduring appeal of Ireland’s history, heritage and diaspora. With so many wonderful places to visit across the capital and the wider island, why not start with a trip to EPIC and discover the stories of people who left Ireland and went on to become Olympians, Oscar winners, rock stars, Nobel Prize winners, Presidents and everything in between!
