Eoin Pól Ó Rúis

Where are you from in Ireland?

Tír Eoghain

What country are you teaching in?

What is the name of your school?

Scuola Europea di Varese

What’s the best thing about where you live now?

I love the European environment in which I work and I love that I can step outside the gates of school and live an Italian lifestyle. Switzerland is only 30 minutes away and Rome is only 3 hours away on the high-speed train. Living here and teaching Irish is like a dream come true; in the sense that you really have access to many different worlds as well as bring something uniquely Irish to the mix. It is this that makes me so proud to share on occasions like St. Patrick’s Day.

Name 3 things you miss from home

I miss my family and friends, obviously.
I also miss being in my garden.

I suppose I would also have to confess to missing cod and chips from Manor Street takeaway.

What do you think makes a great teacher?

I think the key word for a great teacher is respect. I think a teacher needs to earn respect from his or her students and not take it for granted as coming with the role. Remembering that we are all human and that it is ok to make mistakes and ask for help is something I have always tried to live by in the classroom. Creating a happy and secure classroom environment is also something I believe is essential. In very many ways, it’s like the gardening I miss so much from home!
